 |
 |
What is smoke testing?
Smoke testing is the method that JEA uses to test for clearwater entry into the sewer systems. | ^ back |
 | |
 |
What is clearwater?
Clearwater is a term used to refer to rain water or irrigation water that flows into our sanitary sewer system. The flow burdens our sewer treatment facilities and should be handled by storm drains, retention ponds, and natural runoff. | ^ back |
 | |
 |
How will the smoke testing be performed?
JEA will use a special machine to blow smoke in the sanitary sewer manholes. The smoke travels through the system and escapes by rising through openings. The rising smoke will show our testing team the locations of potential problems. | ^ back |
 | |
 |
Why do we need to test the sanitary sewer lines?
JEA wants to decrease costs and help the sanitary sewer system work more efficiently by identifying sources of clearwater entry into the system. | ^ back |
 | |
 |
Will the smoke enter my home?
Smoke will not appear inside your home unless there are dry fixtures or problems with your system. | ^ back |
 | |
 |
How can I keep the smoke from appearing in my house?
Make sure all sinks, toilets, and other plumbing fixtures have water in them. Pour water into the drain of any unused fixtures. This will force the smoke to exit out of the rooftop vent. | ^ back |
 | |
 |
Do I have to be at my residence when the testing is done?
No. The testing is done in the system outside your home. | ^ back |
 | |
 |
What should I do if smoke appears inside my house?
Contact any member of the JEA testing team working on your street, or call the JEA Project Outreach Hotline at 665-7500. | ^ back |
 | |
 |
Will the smoke stay in my house a long time?
The smoke disappears quickly. To make it disappear faster, open a window or outside door near the smoky area. | ^ back |
 | |
 |
Will it come through my sprinkler system into my house?
No. | ^ back |
 | |
 |
Will it make my water have a funny taste?

Where does JEA water come from?
JEA pumps water from an underground source called the Floridan Aquifer. The Aquifer's water is of good quality and requires little treatment. | ^ back |
 | |
 |
Can JEA require me to connect to their water and sewer line?
No. JEA is a provider of electric, water and sewer service. The Department of Regulatory and Environmental Service (RESD) is the enforcement agency that may require connections depending on circumstances. | ^ back |
 | |
 |
What is reclaim water?
Reclaim water is highly treated wastewater for use in selected irrigation and industrial processes. It is not intended for drinking or recreational purposes, but it does help reduce the demand on the Floridan Aquifer. | ^ back |
 | |
 |
What are the uses for the different colored pipes mean?
In JEA's service territory, blue pipes are for water, green pipes are for sanitary sewer and purple pipes are for reclaimed water. | ^ back |
 | |
 |
What is pipebursting?
Pipebursting is a technique that allows replacement of underground pipe with minimal disruption to the surrounding community and environment and roadways. As the pipe bursting tool travels through the existing line (host pipe), it effectively bursts the old line, displacing the fragments into the surrounding soil while simultaneously pulling in the new product pipe. | ^ back |

The Duval County Health Department ranks areas for conversion. They inform the City Council, which gives the prioritized list to the mayor for allocations of funds. | ^ back |
